The life of Miriam Cook Jones began August 22, 1955, in rural Kershaw, S.C.. She was the second child, first daughter, of the late Addie Mae Cook and Earl McDonald. At an early, age “Mimi”, as she was called by those dear to her, gave her life to Christ at Oak Ridge Baptist Church, the worship center for the family. Mimi graduated from Andrew Jackson High School in Kershaw, S.C. She received a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering Technology and Master of Arts degree in Rehabilitative Counseling from South Carolina State College (University) in Orangeburg, S.C. Additionally, she received 30 Hours of Post Graduate Study in Counselor Education from the University of South Carolina and a Bachelor of Arts in Special Education from Western Governors University. Miriam enjoyed various positions in education and counseling in her home state of South Carolina and more recently in Rhode Island. It was her life mission to instill in others a belief in their own self-worth and value. She could often be heard saying: “best foot forward.” After living many years in Orangeburg, S.C. and Sumter, S.C., Mimi moved to Rhode Island to be near her beloved daughters settling in North Providence, RI. She recently joined Allen AME Church and immediately became an active participant in Bible Study and Worship. After a sudden illness, God called Miriam home on Sunday afternoon, January 10. Mimi leaves to cherish her memory: two daughters, Kamilah (Christian) Harreveld of Amsterdam, Netherlands, and Maryam E. Jones of North Providence, RI; one grandson, Johan C. Harreveld of Amsterdam, Netherlands. She also leaves one brother: Michael (Joann) Cook of Kershaw, S.C.; a host of nephews, nieces, uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends who were all special to her.
